I woke up from the sound of someone doing the dishes, which was quite a surprise for me as in our girl’s house I don’t know any big fan of doing dishes in generally and in the morning specifically))
It is a very common thing here in Brazil to have a cleaning lady even if the income of the family is pretty average. I tried few times to clean the house as good as these cleaning people do, but this is still a big secret for me – how do they do it just so good? I mean, you don’t need to be high educated to do this job, and they do it the way better then me.
So far feijoada is my favorite Brazilian food. It’s a stew of black beans with beef, pork, sausages (and whatever parts of a pig) served with rice, stewed greens and … which was originally a typical Portuguese dish. It takes half day to make it in a very proper way with all the meat and fat, or a couple of hours if using just sausages. I’m not a big fan of meat, I won’t eat it every day, but I love it! I think it’s actually the only “Brazilian” food I really like.
After a big lunch we decided to have some fruits for desert and went to Mercadao – Sao Paulo Municipal Market. This was a big mistake to eat any lunch before coming here. All the sellers want you to try everything they have in the stalls even if you just tried it all already from the neighbor. We have had to stop when I said if I put one more piece of anything into my stomach my body would explode.
It’s very hard to surprise me with a fruit or a vegetable I never tried yet, but here were few new. Lets’ go one by one.
Orange “pepper” shape with a horn on top is cashew. Usually we know only the nut part, but you can also eat the rest as a fruit. I tried it first time in Rio and didn’t like.
Black round berries are called Jabuticaba. I tried first in Rio in September when they started selling them everywhere on the streets. In the countries with limited varieties of berries this is the best and cheap option! And here is the video for the prof)
Little red-orange berries between cherries and dates are Pitanga. We ate them a lot from the trees in front of Museu do Amanhã in Rio for free))
The yellow-green balls with stripes I have no idea what it is, we met it just in one stall, but they didn’t want to cut it, and I forgot the name.
Yellow oval fruits are Caja Manga. Some mango relatives with quite a big seed inside.
This was the fruit I haven’t seen before and tried today for the first time.
The purple Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) and his yellow sister. The red one is very common fruit in South East Asia, I tried it first in Vietnam directly from the Dragon Fruit farm. The yellow one is less common, but more sweet. A pretty strange thing I’ve met yellow pitaya many times in Asia, but I don’t think I ever tried. So, this was the second debut for today.
And big wrinkled oranges without seeds.
Sugar-apple I tried already in Asia and I like it, tasty and sweet, but must be soft. I think it is a sort of Soursop, looks different, but seeds and structure are similar.
Sapodilla fruit I first tried in India and was buying it pretty often as it was the cheapest fruit at the market near my house.
Lychee is also a fruit that I tried before and ate a lot in Cambodia.
This is a different type of kiwi called SunGold Kiwifruit.
Passion fruits are frequently used in Brazil in variety of meals, deserts and beverages.
And small papayas the same as in Bali – три рубля ведро (freaking cheap).
I pointed to this fruit and asked my friend – do you know what it is? She said yes, this is a fruit that prevents cancer. And I asked her, have you ever tried it? She said, no, but must be good. Hahahahaha)))) Then I just gave her to smell it and she changed her mind))))
Here in Brazil Noni is very famous, rare and expensive. It’s hard to grow it. And in Bali you just shake the tree on the street, keep it until you can feel disgusting smell from 10 meters away, then blend it and drink. I kind of like it and drink it pretty often. Some people mix it with another fruits to make the taste nicer, but for my opinion you can’t make it better. It’s like if you take one kilo of shit and mix it with one kilo of sugar it would be 2 kilos of shit anyway.
About these two the sellers were surprised I had no interest about, but grapes (even this shape) and persimmons I ate a lot in my childhood in Russia))
If you follow my past I strongly recommend you to come here very hungry. Apart from fruits you can have a rest in Hocca Bar and try a famous food which you can only try in Sao Paulo – sanduiche de presunto – then you will become a real paulista (the native citizen of Sao Paulo). Basically, it’s a bench of sliced sausage rolled with cheese between two pieces of bread.
I was a bit worrying if I could got any disease as all the fruits we tried on the market were not washed. But it was all good, I didn’t have any problems after. You never know if they wash fruits and vegetables even in the restaurants.
Then we walked until Republica station which was a bit far but nice to do some exercise for the full stomachs. Quite often walking in Sao Paolo you will meet really cool wall paintings just around the corners with no evidence they might be there. This time when we crushed once again in this amazing wall art my friend made a decision to bring me to the graffiti street tomorrow she heard before but never been.
Today was definitely a food day. I was about to explode few hours ago but after the adventure with Lukas (I’ll write about it later) we were hungry again and prepared tira gosto plate with cheese and sausages.
… And a passion fruit mousse left from yesterday… Come one, we are girls, we always eat sweets after 10pm. Even those who swear they don’t)
